The Alliance of Independent Members of SportAccord (AIMS) has thrown its weight behind a collaboration that brings together two of the main sports represented by the organization. Speaking at the AIMS General Assembly in Bangkok on August 13, the federation’s newly elected President, Stephan Fox, announced that AIMS is sanctioning a series of mixed combat sports events that will feature both muaythai and MMA fights. The inaugural event is set to take place in Bangkok on August 22.
The announcement of the muaythai and MMA collaboration represents the first major initiative by the federation’s newly-elected management team. Earlier this year, AIMS elected Stephan Fox as its new president. Fox is also the General Secretary of the International Federation of Muaythai Amateurs (IFMA) and a Vice President of the World Muaythai Council (WMC). The newly-elected Vice President of AIMS is Panagiotis Theodoropoulos, who is also the President of Ju-Jitsu International Federation.
AIMS represents 23 non-Olympic recognized sports. The amalgamation is designed to support the development of several sports at the grassroots level by sharing facilities, expertise and knowhow with the ultimate aim of achieving recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Although originally developed independently of AIMS, the combined muaythai and MMA events fit perfectly into the organization’s philosophy.
Elite Boxing (EB) of Bangkok and Abu Dhabi Warriors (ADW) of the UAE have been in negotiations for the past 6 months with the aim of creating a mixed combat sports event series that combines each group’s connections, networks and expertise.
As a part of Elite Fight Night Champions League, Abu Dhabi Warriors are sponsoring two superfights on August 22 in Bangkok, Thailand. Four welterweights will enter the ring in Asia but only two will earn a ticket to the Grand Final in Abu Dhabi Warriors at the end of the year.
This inaugural event is expected to be the first in a series of events jointly organized by EB and ADW. More details will be announced shortly.
